We live in a competitive society where looking and feeling your best is an important factor in our business and social relationships. The last few years have seen a dramatic increase in the number of men opting for plastic surgery.
However, men are different from women, and their plastic surgery must be customized as such. Men want a better defined, more angular shape on both their bodies and faces. They want to look youthful and vibrant, rather than "beautiful." Dr. Saber understands men's distinctive needs before, during and after surgery. We provide men with excellent experiences as we enhance their appearance and lifestyle.
This section reviews some of the special considerations for men contemplating cosmetic procedures.
Botox
Botox injections are very popular for the treatment of certain facial wrinkles including the frown lines, forehead creases and "crow's feet". Unlike fillers, Botox acts by paralyzing the affected muscles. Botox is non-surgical, is relatively painless, and there is no anesthesia required.
The Botox procedure is quick and usually done in Dr. Saber's examination room. Botox benefits last 3 to 4 months so treatments are needed 3 to 4 times per year to maintain them. After millions of Botox treatments in the US and around the world, side effects are found to be treatable, mild and rare.
Face Lift (Rhytidectomy)
A facelift is a popular procedure for men, because it can reduce the signs of aging quickly with very noticeable results. A facelift procedure may include removing and tightening muscles and skin around the neck and face. Careful consideration is given to placement of suture lines as they may be more difficult for men to hide, since they don't wear make-up and have significantly shorter hair. (back to top)
Liposuction
Now among the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures, liposuction (also known as "lipoplasty" or "suction lipoplasty") is performed using a variety of techniques. Dr. Saber will determine which type of liposuction will best suit your body type and goals.
The ideal male body shape is considered to be trim with broad shoulders and chest, a flat abdomen, and a narrow hip-thigh area. However, as men age, areas of fat tend to accumulate around the abdomen, the flanks ("love handles"), the breast area (a condition called gynecomastia), and along the chin and neck. Men sometimes seek liposuction to remove these fatty areas that are resistant to diet and exercise. Liposuction is intended to produce a permanent improvement in the contour and proportion of the treated areas.
In many cases, liposuction alone can effectively correct these problem areas. Men retain their skin elasticity longer than women do, and the areas of fat beneath the skin tend to be firmer and more vascular than those in women. Because of these and other factors, liposuction in men is usually very effective. Men with good skin elasticity who have only a moderate amount of excess abdominal fat may benefit from liposuction alone.
Men who have some loose, hanging skin as well as areas of excess fat may opt for a traditional excision procedure (surgical skin removal) in addition to liposuction. An excision may also be performed on gynecomastia patients whose breast enlargement is made up of mostly glandular tissue, rather than fat.
Liposuction is done on an outpatient basis. General anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation is usually used for safety and comfort. Small suction tubes (cannulas) are inserted through very short incisions placed in inconspicuous locations near the fat deposits, and excess fat is removed. (back to top)
Male Breast Reduction (Gynecomastia)
The treatment of Gynecomastia is probably the most common operation sought by men. Gynecomastia is a condition where fatty tissue and breast tissue cause enlargement of the breasts. The condition usually starts in men in adolescence and does not respond to diet and exercise.
The treatment most often entails only liposuction and tissue removal using a very small incision underneath the breast. In some cases, additional surgery to cut out scar or breast tissue may be necessary. (back to top)
Rhinoplasty
Nose reshape surgery is one of the most popular and effective cosmetic plastic surgery procedures. Most patients seek a reduction in the nasal profile, but some men may need augmentation or enhancement of the profile. Rhinoplasty may also be used to correct breathing problems. Dr. Saber will review options with patients so they can make an informed decision. (back to top)
Scupltra
Scupltra® treatments to fill in wrinkles may last two to three years, but because it is relatively expensive, it is recommended only for patients that want to address broad areas of fat loss. Multiple Sculptra® treatments are needed to achieve desired results and this may be seen as a benefit because the benefits build gradually. SCULPTRA® treatments were FDA approved as a cosmetic filler in 2009 after being used since 2004 for treatment of major fat loss situations. Dr. Saber will discuss facial treatment procedure options with you to determine what option may work best for you. (back to top)
HA Filler
Hyaluronic acid- Restylane and Perlane to fill in depressions and wrinkles. May last up to a year or more. Dr Saber will discuss which of these fillers will work best for you. (back to top)
Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)
A full abdominoplasty or "tummy tuck" may be chosen by men who have hanging abdominal skin (usually the result of significant weight loss), loose abdominal muscles and/or neglected hernias. This is a major surgical procedure that removes excess fat and tightens abdominal wall muscles. Men with good skin elasticity who have only a moderate amount of excess abdominal fat may benefit from liposuction alone. (back to top)
